“…and he hated it. Loathed it…” – David Bowie

Did you know that David Bowie wrote a song about Andy Warhol?

In 1971, Bowie released a song called “Andy Warhol”. It was written as an acoustic song for his album “Hunky Dory” for one of his greatest inspirations. Unfortunately, the song did not impress Andy.

In a 2003 interview with Performing Songwriter, Bowie revealed Andy Warhol’s reaction:

“I took the song to The Factory when I first came to America and played it to him, and he hated it. Loathed it… It didn’t go down very well, but I got to know him after that. It was my shoes that got him. That’s where we found something to talk about.”

It’s evident that Bowie admired Warhol despite the artist’s apathy towards the song. Bowie even starred as him in the 1996 biopic, “Basquiat (film)”.
